What We Do in the Shadows

A few times a year, I turn into a review site, which is necessitated by two things – a movie that you should see, and a movie that you might not. It’s fine to talk about Clooney dying in Gravity (here too apparently), because everyone’s seen it, and if you haven’t yet, you deserve to be punished. Largely for letting the sub-par 12 Years a Slave win the Oscar. Which was totally your fault.
I don’t mind ruining bad movies at all, and there are a lot of them. I don’t even mind ruining good movies that you won’t see. But What We Do in the Shadows is simply great, one of the best of the year, and merits your off-ass-getting. It’s coming out in the states, and I’m not going to ruin it, just say simply that its achievement is so much more the towering as it has two things going against it, its terrible title (seriously, what was it this year with titles? Edge of Tomorrow was so bad it actually ruined that film’s, the other best, chances) and the fact that it’s about vampires.
Who on earth wants to see another vampire movie? It’s 2015 fer chrissakes, the year after True Blood embarrassedly exploded in blood off the air. Better than slithering I guess. In blood. But Mr. Jemaine Clement and Mr. Taika Waititi pull this subject off big time. It never stops being funny, and it never stops going. It is full of characters, ideas and bits, and things that should absolutely not in any way work. The reaction by or even inclusion of the Nosferatu character is on the face of it a terrible idea. It is instead utterly brilliant.
I can also recommend it because it’s surprisingly sweet, which is probably how they pulled off, you know, all that blood and killing and such. It’s a film balanced utterly on the quality and confidence in its jokes, and given the generally averageness of the year, you need to support it. Go. Go right now.
