In online dating, the line ‘But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best’ has become a trope.

The best way to translate this is ‘You will never see me at anything but my worst’.  Likewise, when someone advertises themselves as ‘funny’ the best you can hope for is an indication that this is the time that you should be laughing.  The discomfort that you feel in picturing such a scenario is nothing compared to the feeling of watching this type of non-shenanigans on screen, where the characters say something that indicates that they couldn’t afford for ‘writer 8 to have the characters something funny here.  He’s good at that’.  This theory began when a man I was forced to work with a man who said ‘I’m a funny guy’.
