The Babadook

The Babadook

My evisceration of The Babadook is a long time coming.  Certainly the most overrated film of 2014 and that's quite a statement in itself, it is a film as detestable as it is incompetent as it is bland.  The piece in question contains the following, which should be somewhere and now it is: Nihilism, likewise is the reproduction of depth, not its illusion.  It reminds me of all those CEOs and other successes.  This may be because I am such a failure, though I made up for it by being a spectacular failure.  Nevertheless, their willingness to work 100 hour weeks in any other context would be diagnosed - correctly - as OCD.  Instead, it is praised and aspired to.  The critical darling of nihilism, which is simply that 'all is darkness', or 'what does it all mean when it means nothing', besides lacking in any complex insight, is an almost deliberate, nay compulsive form of depression.  Just because everybody's got it, doesn't mean it's not a cold.
