Event Horizon

Perhaps not the inventor of the S&M planet (look it up!  Here, but still: look it up!), but the perfecter of same.  It's not a very good movie.  It is not a very scary movie.  The CG zero grav effects, even by 1997 standards, are lousy.  It is, however, a strangely watchable movie.  The actors are hamming it up in wonderful style, possibly because of the set design, which is terrific, rich, distinctive and complete.  It's possibly the very last film with such actual detail, that is to say, they built it.  It was not rendered (see CG) above.  Plus it's got the S&M planet, from which no one returns!
